Flying Stars Feng Shui | Xuan Kong Complete Guide

Xuan Kong Flying Stars (玄空飞星) is the primary Classical Feng Shui system Lee uses in every consultation. It analyses a property through three dimensions simultaneously: time (which period the building belongs to), direction (its precise compass facing), and person (the individual BaZi of each occupant).

This guide explains how the system works, what the nine stars mean, how the natal chart is constructed, and what changed when Period 9 began in 2024 — information that affects every property regardless of when it was built.

What the System Is

What Xuan Kong Flying Stars Is and Where It Comes From

Xuan Kong Flying Stars integrates the principles of Yin and Yang, the Five Elements, the Bagua, the Luo Shu numbers, and the 24 Mountains into a single analytical system. It analyses the energy of a property by calculating how nine celestial stars distribute themselves across nine sectors of a building based on when the building was occupied and what direction it faces.

The system was popularised during the Qing Dynasty by grandmaster Shen Zhu Ren in his work Shen Shi Xuan Kong Xue. The term Xuan Kong means mysterious and void, referring to the invisible movement of star energies through time and space. It is the most sophisticated and widely practised system in Classical Feng Shui today.

What makes Flying Stars distinct from all other feng shui approaches is the intersection of three factors in every reading: time, direction, and person. The same floor plan, facing a different direction, produces a completely different natal chart. The same natal chart, in a different period, produces different recommendations. The same property, occupied by different people, produces different individual guidance. No two consultations are the same.

Lee uses Xuan Kong Flying Stars as her primary system for all residential, commercial, and online consultations. See how Lee trained in and applies the Xuan Kong system in her practice.

Time in Flying Stars

The Three Cycles and Nine Periods

Time in Xuan Kong Flying Stars is structured through San Yuan Jiu Yun — Three Cycles and Nine Periods. One complete cycle spans 180 years, divided into three 60-year cycles (Upper, Middle, and Lower), each containing three 20-year Periods. Each Period is governed by one of the nine stars, and the governing star of the current Period becomes the most auspicious star for that 20-year window.

Period 7 — 1984 to 2003

Governed by Star 7 (Metal). Star 7 was the reigning wealth star. Properties built in this period carry Star 7 as their Base Star in the centre palace.

Period 8 — 2004 to 2023

Governed by Star 8 (Earth). Star 8 was the most auspicious star. Most properties consulted in India today were built in Period 8 and carry this natal chart.

Period 9 — 2024 to 2043

Currently active. Governed by Star 9 (Fire). Star 9 is now the primary wealth star. All properties require Period 9 reassessment regardless of when they were built.

The natal chart is permanent but its interpretation changes. A property built in Period 8 keeps its Period 8 natal chart. The stars in each palace do not move. However, which stars are now timely (auspicious) and which are untimely (inauspicious) shifts when a new Period begins. This is why every property needs a Period 9 review even if it received a full consultation during Period 8.

The period of a property is determined by when the residents moved in, not when construction was completed. A building completed in January 2024 but occupied after February 4, 2024 is a Period 9 property. Occupied before February 4, 2024, it is Period 8. Major renovations including new roof, new main door, and new flooring can reset a property to the current period.

The Nine Stars Defined

All Nine Stars with Their Classical Names, Elements, and Period 9 Status

Each star's auspicious or inauspicious nature is period-dependent. The descriptions below reflect classical associations alongside the current Period 9 status from 2024 to 2043. The elemental remedies reference the Five Elements system.

1Star 1

Tan Lang Xing (贪狼星) — Greedy Wolf Star

Element: Water · Period 9 Status: Auspicious — secondary wealth and career star

Life Areas
Career, intelligence, new beginnings, business
Body
Kidneys, blood, ears
Activate With
Water and Metal elements
Direction
North sector home position
Period 9 note: Star 1 remains a consistently auspicious star and acts as the secondary wealth and career star throughout Period 9. A Water Star 1 at an active sector is a good activation point.
2Star 2

Ju Men Xing (巨门星) — Illness Star

Element: Earth · Period 9 Status: Transitioning — requires careful handling at the start of Period 9

Life Areas
Health issues, stomach, digestive system, matriarch
Body
Stomach, spleen, abdomen
Traditional Remedy
Metal elements (six-rod wind chime, metal Wu Lou)
Direction
Southwest sector home position
Period 9 note: Star 2 is transitioning from fully inauspicious to a more nuanced role as it approaches its own governing period. In early Period 9, it still carries illness risk and requires Metal balancing. Do not activate Star 2 aggressively without professional guidance. This is one of the stars where self-applied remedies carry the highest risk.
3Star 3

Lu Cun Xing (禄存星) — Conflict Star

Element: Wood · Period 9 Status: Inauspicious — quarrel and conflict energy

Life Areas
Arguments, legal disputes, misunderstandings, conflict
Body
Feet, liver, throat
Remedy
Fire element (Fire exhausts Wood)
Direction
East sector home position
Period 9 note: Remains inauspicious. Households with recurring arguments or legal problems should check whether Star 3 is active at the main door or bedroom sector.
4Star 4

Wen Qu Xing (文曲星) — Academic Star

Element: Wood · Period 9 Status: Less powerful than in Period 8

Life Areas
Academic achievement, creative work, romance, literary success
Body
Gallbladder, hips, buttocks
Activate With
Water and Wood elements
Direction
Southeast sector home position
Period 9 note: Star 4 governed both academic and romantic energy. Its influence is diminishing in Period 9 relative to its strength in earlier periods. Children's study areas and bedrooms that previously benefited from Star 4 activation should be reassessed.
5Star 5

Lian Zhen Xing (廉贞星) — Yellow Misfortune Star

Element: Earth · Period 9 Status: Deeply inauspicious — the most dangerous star in Xuan Kong

Life Areas
Financial loss, accidents, illness, disasters when activated
Body
Spleen, digestive system, centre constitution
Remedy
Strong Metal only (five-element pagoda, six coins, metal Wu Lou)
Direction
Centre palace home position
Critical rule: Star 5 must never be activated with Water or Fire. Water activates the sector, amplifying the misfortune energy. Fire produces Earth, strengthening Star 5 further. Only Metal — which weakens Earth through the Productive Cycle — is the correct remedy. This is the most consequential rule in Flying Stars analysis. See authentic Metal remedies for Star 5.
6Star 6

Wu Qu Xing (武曲星) — Military Arts Star

Element: Metal · Period 9 Status: Auspicious — one of the traditional Three Auspicious Stars (1, 6, 8)

Life Areas
Career advancement, authority, power, helpful mentors, travel
Body
Head, skull, lungs
Activate With
Metal and Earth elements
Direction
Northwest sector home position (Qian trigram, patriarch)
Period 9 note: Star 6 remains auspicious and is associated with the patriarch and career authority. Strong in sectors where mentor support or professional advancement is sought.
7Star 7

Po Jun Xing (破军星) — Broken Soldier Star

Element: Metal · Period 9 Status: Inauspicious — post-peak and now associated with conflict and loss

Life Areas
Robbery, legal conflict, loss of property, violence
Body
Mouth, lungs, chest
Remedy
Water element (Water weakens Metal through Productive Cycle)
Direction
West sector home position
Period 9 note: Star 7 was the reigning star in Period 7 (1984 to 2003) and is now fully post-peak and inauspicious. Properties with Star 7 as a Water Star at the main door facing direction should have a water cure placed carefully to weaken its negative energy.
8Star 8

Zuo Fu Xing (左辅星) — Left Assistant Star

Element: Earth · Period 9 Status: Post-peak but still auspicious — now governs relationships and steady wealth

Life Areas
Wealth, prosperity, nobility, relationships in Period 9
Body
Hands, fingers, spine
Activate With
Earth and Fire elements
Direction
Northeast sector home position
Period 9 note: Star 8 was the dominant wealth star in Period 8. It retains auspicious qualities in Period 9 but transitions toward governing relationships and steady accumulation rather than primary wealth. The NE sector (its home position) remains worth activating for relationship harmony and study energy.
9Star 9

You Bi Xing (右弼星) — Right Assistant Star

Element: Fire · Period 9 Status: Wang Qi — the primary reigning wealth star from 2024 to 2043

Life Areas
Wealth, recognition, fame, joyous occasions, relationships, spirituality
Body
Heart, eyes, blood vessels
Activate With
Wood and Fire elements
Direction
South sector home position (Li trigram)
Period 9 note: Star 9 is the sole Fire-element star among the nine, making it unique in the system. It is now the primary wealth and recognition star for the next 20 years. A Water Star 9 at the main door facing direction or in an active sector represents the strongest wealth activation available in this period. Activate with Wood and Fire elements.

The Natal Chart

Three Numbers Per Palace — What They Mean

Every palace (sector) in a Flying Stars natal chart contains three numbers. Understanding what each number represents is the foundation of reading any Flying Stars assessment.

Mountain Star (Sitting Star) — Governs People

The number on the left in each palace. Determined by the sitting direction of the property (opposite of facing). Yin in nature. Governs people energy: health, relationships, the number of benefactors, and family harmony.

Activated by physical landforms, hills, elevated structures outside the property, or by tall, heavy furniture and structures inside. The classical principle: mountains govern people (山管人丁).

An auspicious Mountain Star (1, 6, 8, or 9 in Period 9) in a bedroom sector supports the health and relationships of the occupant. An inauspicious Mountain Star in a bedroom may contribute to health issues or relationship difficulties for that specific occupant.

Water Star (Facing Star) — Governs Wealth

The number on the right in each palace. Determined by the facing direction of the property. Yang in nature. Governs wealth energy: money, career, material success, and financial flow.

Activated by water features, open space, roads, or movement outside the property, or by water features and active areas inside. The classical principle: water governs wealth (水管财).

An auspicious Water Star (1, 8, or 9 in Period 9) at the main door or in an active sector represents a wealth activation opportunity. An inauspicious Water Star (2, 5, or 7) where water is placed will amplify the negative energy of that star significantly.

The Base Star (Period Star) is the central number in each palace. It is determined by the construction period and distributes across the nine palaces following the Luo Shu path. It cannot be remedied and exerts a background influence on each sector.

Below is an example of a Period 9 natal chart for a property facing South. Each palace shows Mountain Star (left, blue), Base Star (centre, grey), and Water Star (right, red).

Mountain Star (people, health)
Base Star (period)
Water Star (wealth)
The most critical rule when reading this chart: Before placing any water feature to activate wealth, identify the Water Star in that sector first. In the example above, the North sector (sitting direction) has Water Star 5. Placing a water feature there would activate Star 5 and amplify misfortune energy. This is the most common and consequential DIY error in Flying Stars feng shui.

The natal chart is constructed using the facing direction's exact degree on the 24 Mountains, the construction period, and the Yin or Yang nature of the 24-Mountain sub-direction. This determines whether the Mountain and Water Stars fly in ascending or descending order across the nine palaces. This is why Lee asks clients to provide the exact compass degree with calibration, not just a general direction.

Period 9 — What Changed in 2024

What Every Property Owner Needs to Know About Period 9

Period 9 began on February 4, 2024 and runs until 2043. This 20-year period is governed by Star 9, the Right Assistant Star, whose element is Fire. The shift from Period 8 to Period 9 changes the timeliness of every star in the system and requires a reassessment of all properties regardless of when they were built.

Star 9 — Primary Wealth Star

Now the Wang Qi (reigning) star. The most important star to activate in any property for the next 20 years. Wherever Star 9 falls as a Water Star in an active sector, use Wood and Fire elements for activation.

Star 8 — Relationship and Steady Wealth

Post-peak but still auspicious. Transitions to governing relationships and gradual wealth accumulation in Period 9. Activate with Earth and Fire. The NE sector (its home position) remains worth activating.

Star 1 — Secondary Wealth and Career

Remains consistently auspicious. Acts as the secondary wealth and career star throughout Period 9. Activate with Water and Metal elements wherever Star 1 appears as a Water Star in active sectors.

Star 2 — Handle with Care

Transitioning from inauspicious to a more nuanced role. Still carries illness risk in early Period 9. Requires both Earth cures for careful activation and Metal for balancing. Do not activate without professional guidance.

Star 4 — Diminishing Power

Moving toward reduced auspicious status in Period 9. Study areas and bedrooms that relied on Star 4 activation in Period 8 should be reassessed. Academic and romance activation through Star 4 is less reliable now.

Stars 3, 5, 7 — Remain Inauspicious

All three require elemental remedies. Star 5 (Metal remedy) and Star 3 (Fire remedy) follow the same logic as in Period 8. Star 7 (Water remedy) is now fully post-peak and its negative characteristics are strengthening.

What this means for your existing property: A Period 8 property with Star 9 as its Water Star at a main active sector was previously treated as a growing energy star. It is now the primary wealth star. If that sector has been dormant or unused, activating it now with Wood and Fire elements represents the most significant feng shui opportunity available in this period.

The Layered Time System

Annual and Monthly Stars — Why the Energy Changes Every Year

The natal chart of a property is permanent. But Flying Stars operates with three layers of time, each overlaying the next. This is what makes the system a living analysis rather than a one-time assessment.

Natal Chart Stars (Permanent)

The Mountain and Water Stars cast from the facing direction and construction period. These never change unless a major renovation resets the property's period. They form the permanent energy blueprint of the property.

Annual Stars (Change Every February 4th)

A new star occupies the centre palace each year on February 4th, and all annual stars distribute across the nine palaces following the Luo Shu path. Annual stars interact with the natal chart's permanent Mountain and Water Stars in each sector, amplifying or suppressing their effects for that year.

An annual Star 5 visiting a sector with an already-inauspicious natal star doubles the negative effect and requires Metal remedies placed before February 4th. An annual Star 9 visiting a sector with an auspicious natal Water Star represents an exceptional one-year wealth activation window.

Monthly Stars (Change Every Month)

Monthly stars change following the Chinese solar calendar. Most relevant for significant events, construction or renovation work, and ground-breaking activities. A month with an inauspicious monthly star in a sector where construction is planned may produce unfavourable outcomes for the project or the occupants.

This layered structure is why annual updates are valuable. The remedies that addressed the natal chart in one year may need adjusting when the annual star changes what is arriving in each sector. Lee's consultations include the current year's annual Flying Stars overlaid on the property's natal chart so that all recommendations are immediately actionable for the year ahead.

What the Consultation Produces

What a Flying Stars Assessment Delivers for Your Property

After casting the natal chart using the property's facing direction and construction period, Lee produces a complete sector-wise assessment covering all nine palaces. Here is what the deliverable includes.

Sector-by-Sector Star Assessment

For each of the nine palaces: the Mountain Star and Water Star combination, whether it is auspicious or inauspicious in the current Period 9, the elemental remedy required and the exact material to use, and whether the sector should be activated or suppressed.

Main Door Analysis

The main door is the primary point of Qi entry into any property. The Water Star at the facing direction determines what energy is activated every time the door opens. Lee identifies the Water Star at the main door, its Period 9 timeliness, and what this means for the financial energy of the household.

Individual Family Member Recommendations

The BaZi of each family member is cross-referenced against the natal chart. This produces individual recommendations for sleeping direction, working direction, which sectors each person should use, and which to avoid. The same bedroom can support one family member and be challenging for another.

Annual Star Overlay for the Current Year

The annual Flying Stars for the current year are overlaid on the natal chart, identifying which sectors need immediate elemental attention and which represent time-sensitive activation opportunities for Wealth, Health, Relationship, and Growth.

Elemental Remedy Specifications

For every inauspicious sector: the exact elemental remedy specified by material (not just type), the placement position within the sector, and the reasoning based on which cycle (Productive, Destructive, or Weakening) is applied to counter that specific star. Browse authentic Five Element remedies recommended only after your chart identifies what your property requires.

A Note on Precision

The 24 Mountains and Why Exact Degrees Matter

Each of the eight compass directions in Xuan Kong is divided into three sub-directions of 15 degrees each, producing 24 Mountain sub-directions in total. These 24 Mountains determine two critical things: first, which exact natal chart applies to the property from the 144 possible charts, and second, whether the Mountain and Water Stars fly in ascending (Yang) or descending (Yin) order across the nine palaces.

A one-degree difference in facing direction can place a property in a different 24-Mountain sub-direction, producing an entirely different natal chart. Two neighbouring properties on the same street, both appearing to "face South," may face South sub-direction 1 (S1) or South sub-direction 2 (S2) and will have different natal charts with different Mountain and Water Star distributions.

This is why Lee requests clients to calibrate their phone compass before taking readings and to provide the exact degree, not just the general direction. It is also why the facing direction must be re-verified if a property straddles the boundary between two sub-directions, as these boundary zones (called void lines) require substitute star charts in some classical methods.

For apartments specifically: The facing direction is the building's main facing direction, not the individual flat's door. All flats in the same building share the same natal chart base. This is a precision point that fundamentally changes the Flying Stars reading for anyone attempting a self-assessment using their flat door direction.

Common Questions

Questions About Flying Stars Feng Shui

Online calculators can produce the basic natal chart structure. The challenge is accurate facing direction determination and correct 24-Mountain sub-direction identification. An inaccurate facing degree produces the wrong natal chart entirely. For apartments, identifying the correct building facing direction rather than the flat door adds another layer of precision that most self-assessments miss.

The natal chart does not change. What changes is the interpretation of each star's timeliness. Period 8 properties retain their Period 8 natal chart but the stars shift in auspicious or inauspicious status relative to Period 9's governing star (Star 9). A Period 9 reassessment identifies which previously auspicious sectors are changing energy and which new activation opportunities have emerged.

Star 5 (Yellow Misfortune Star) as a Mountain or Water Star in any active sector is the most critical to identify and remedy with Metal. Star 2 (Illness Star) also requires attention wherever it lands. On the auspicious side, Star 9 is the primary wealth star in Period 9 (2024 to 2043) and should be activated with Wood and Fire wherever it falls as a Water Star in an active sector.

The natal chart is permanent. Annual stars should be reviewed every year before February 4th to identify which sectors need adjustment for the incoming year. Properties that received their initial consultation in Period 8 should have a Period 9 reassessment to identify which previously auspicious sectors are now changing energy and which new sectors present activation opportunities for the next 20 years.

Yes. Commercial properties use the same facing direction, construction period, and nine-sector natal chart analysis as residential properties. Career and wealth activation sectors take precedence in a commercial assessment over health and relationship sectors. Lee offers dedicated commercial Flying Stars assessments for offices, shops, restaurants, and business spaces.
